El Gato Coffeehouse Pop-Up Party!

This past Sunday I attended El Gato Coffeehouse’s Pop Up Party, and wow! The idea behind this coffee shop has got to be one of the coolest things about Houston right now. I know that’s a big statement, but hear me out. El Gato Coffeehouse could be Houston’s first coffee shop that will merge a coffee shop environment with a cat petting section with adoptable kittens.

catunnamed

I am certain we have all heard of cat-petting-themed cafés but, what makes El Gato Coffeehouse unique is its partnership with Houston Humane Society. El Gato Coffeehouse’s goal is to provide its customers with a hip coffee shop environment while simultaneously providing an opportunity for Houston kittens to find a “furrever” home. Customers can expect a place to relax (or work) or a place to play with Houston kittens while enjoying a nice cuppa, among other tasty treats and specialty drinks.

Walking in, customers will find themselves in a hip coffee shop: coffee bar with various treats and drink options, cool coffee chairs and tables to hang out or work at. On the cat-lounge side of things, guests will have a chance to interact with adoptable kittens from Houston Humane Society for a small fee. The cat lounge will be an adoption center suitable for 15-20 adoptable kittens, each with a place to be themselves while mingling and bonding with El Gato Coffeehouse guests.

They were all my fave, but this one stole my heart!

During the free pop-up party event this past Sunday, guests were able to walk into an idea of what will be the coffee shop area and then walk around to the cat petting area. The petting area will be in the same building, but in a completely closed off room, away from the food, drinks, and whatnot. We were able to take our drinks in and then had the chance to play with roughly 5 kittens. All of which were playful and very friendly.  The party showcased different local artists in Houston that had excellent cat-inspired work! From wall art pieces to statement necklaces and handbags, the items being sold were all so cool, perfect for the artsy feel of El Gato Coffeehouse.  Check them out:

Although this project is still in the works, I feel it will take Houston’s hip community to the next level while doing so much for Houston animals.  Not only did guests show so much love to these adorable kittens, but we did so as a community. There was so much togetherness during this event. It all felt like a group activity rather than a bunch of individuals petting kitties. Everyone was so happy and amused by the kittens, strangers were hanging out with strangers, laughing and petting the cats. The one thing we all had in common was the love we wanted to share with the kittens.

The project was founded by Renee Reed, a native Houstonian and lifelong cat lover. With the launch of El Gato Coffeehouse and the help of the Houston Humane Society, Reed hopes to educate and raise awareness to the Houston community about cat population control. If you would like to donate to this amazing project, Reed has set up a Kickstarter account to raise funds for this amazing cause.

Without a doubt, this one of the coolest things about Houston right now. Even if the project hasn’t officially taken off, it’s a beautiful thing to have Houstonians advocate for animals in such a grand way. I often hear people speak of their love towards animals, but very rarely do I see people actually take action and express that love in a way that will benefit so many. I cannot wait for this project to take off! I will definitely be one of the “regulars” at El Gato Coffeehouse. I can’t wait! Thank you for stopping by.

Long Lasting Memories- In a Mug!

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. All opinions are my own.

If you are reading this, I will assume you have more than one coffee/tea mug. I will also assume you are considering adding another mug to your collection or want to design one as a gift for someone else. Either way, today I will show you how I created a long lasting custom designed coffee mug. Self-designed mugs have been around for years and, thanks to Pinterest, over the years the recipe to designing these mugs continues to get more efficient.

img_8411When I first read about self-designed cups, I read they were designed with sharpie markers and then baked for 30 minutes. However, when searching for designs for my own cup, I also came across countless of reviews talking about how faulty that method is. Nevertheless, I decided to give the method ago but instead, I doubled the steps and added one more material to the process: Acrylic sealing spray. And that my friends, appears to be doing the trick. Mind you, it was a long process but one that is worth it if you want to give a gift that lasts.

So, here’s what you need:
1. Blank mug, whatever color
2. A design for your mug
3. Oil based sharpie marker(s)
4. Oven
5. Acrylic sealing spray
6. Gloves

Steps:

  1. Draw your design on the mug once and allow it to dry for 2 hours. Add another coat to your design and allow it to dry, again for two hours. (Tip: if you need help on how to draw or transfer your own design on to the mug, check out this blog post: http://crafts.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-decorate-a-coffee-mug-using-a-porcelain-marker–craft-7454)
  2. Place mug in cool oven and allow it heat up to 350 degrees. Bake for 30 minutes and let it sit in the oven until it is completely cooled off. Do not move the mug while hot because the ceramic can crack. Once the mug is cool to the touch, you can move to step 3.
  3. Draw over your design one more time. Allow to dry for two hours.
  4. Repeat step 2.
  5. Once mug is completely cooled off, put on your gloves, go outside, and spray your mug with the acrylic sealing spray. 1-2 coats is enough.
  6. Allow your cup to dry for 2-3 hours.

img_8674

Yes, I know this is a long process! But it’s what seems to be working. Below is a picture of the cup I gave my friend after many washes.

I had a great time creating this project. Even though I had to design two mugs since I accidentally dropped and broke the first one. Haha. Have you ever designed a mug with sharpies? If so, did the design last? I would love to learn more ways to make ceramic designs that last and survive the dishwasher. I can’t wait to see how this mug turns out in a year or so. Don’t worry, I’ll update this blog post😛. In the meantime, I will continue designing mugs using this method. Remember, there’s no limit to your creativity.

Thank you for stopping by!

Can wine get better? Yes, yes it can!

disclaimer: this is not a sponsored post. All opinions are my own.

I know, I know. What a promising title have I picked for this blog post! Ha! But really, I did find a way to make wine just a bit (or a whole lot) better: by turning the wine bottle into a beautiful chocolate pineapple.

It was one of my closest friends’ birthday a couple of weekends ago. For the life of me, I could not think of anything good enough to get her. Of course, I could have gone with the conventional gift card and balloons with flowers, etc. etc. But, I felt I should get her something a bit more thoughtful. Of course, me being me, felt like getting a little crafty with her gift. As per ush, I logged on Pinterest and typed “gift ideas for friend”. And lo and behold, hundreds of gorgeous ideas popped on my feed. One idea, in particular, caught my eye- a gorgeous pineapple made from Ferrero Rocher chocolates. At first glance, it looked like a bunch of chocolates placed to form the shape of a pineapple. When I clicked on the actual post, I realized it was a wine bottle covered in Ferrero Rocher chocolates and BOOM! I decide to re-create a wine-pineapple-bottle for my dear friend. I used different materials from the ones listed on the blog post I came across, but the idea is just the same. Scroll down for the Pinterest blog post.

Here is what you need:

  1. Wine of your preference. I picked a bottle with curves because I felt it’d give the final product the proper pineapple shape.
  2. Ferrero Rocher chocolates, I used 52 chocolates for my bottle.
  3. Raffia Ribbon
  4. Rope Ribbon (optional)
  5. Gold metallic paint (optional) I ended up not using paint on the final product.
  6. Glue Gun
  7. Real leaves from a tree/plant that needs trimming. I used sago plant leaves
Processed with VSCO with s5 preset
Materials

Steps:

  1. Begin by gluing each chocolate on the wine bottle. Add a drop of hot glue to the base of each chocolate and start placing them on wine bottle from the bottom, up. Stop gluing once you get to the neck of the wine bottle. About 2-3 inches from the lid. Tip 1: Ferrero Rocher chocolates are wrapped in gold foil that is glued to mini paper baking cups. Make sure you add a bit of extra glue between the gold wrapper and the paper baking cups. This may be a bit time consuming, but if you skip this step the chocolates will begin to fall off the paper baking cup once they’re glued onto the wine bottle. Tip 2: start gluing chocolates from the bottom, up. This way, chocolates glued on top of the bottle have extra support from chocolates glued at the bottom.
Processed with VSCO with s5 preset
You may cover wine label if you wish. I chose to leave it open so my friend could see what kind of wine she got.

Processed with VSCO with s5 preset
Completely covered in chocolates wine bottle.
  2. Begin to glue leaves onto the neck of the bottle. You can play with the placement of leaves to your liking. Tip 1: If you are using real leaves like I did, I suggest to use hard leaves. Hard leaves are long lasting and can handle the heat from glue gun a lot better. You can also create your own paper leaves, click on blog post link below for a guide to paper leaves.

Processed with VSCO with s5 preset
Add glue to the lower part of the stem.
  3. Once all your leaves are glued onto wine neck, it’s time to cover those babies with raffia ribbon. Wrap the ribbon all around until you no longer see glued stems. You will use a lot of ribbon, FYI.

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset
Add as much ribbon and rope to the neck of pineapple, tie it, and voila!

Optional Steps:

4.Add rope ribbon for a bit more texture and detail. I added this on the top of raffia       ribbon, I think it adds a nice accent on to the final look.
5. Spray gold spray paint on the leaves. I left this step for last and actually skipped it              because there was enough gold going on with all the chocolates. Ha. But, I am                       including here because it’s an option.
6. Gift this beautiful gift as it is, without wrapper, without gift bag. Whoever you give            this to, they will be surprised as it is since they won’t know a wine bottle is underneath         all that chocolate goodness.
7. Enjoy!

This was the perfect gift for my friend, since she’s a wine lover and of course chocolate lover, too. I was so happy to see her so pleased with her gift. It took me roughly 2 hours to complete it, probably less. Quite frankly, it was one of the easiest projects I have ever created. I wasn’t sure I wanted to create a blog about it since I know several people might benefit from a gift like this. *wink*. Hehe. But alas, I had such a great time doing this! If your significant other, or close friend love wine and candy, this might be the perfect gift for them. You can even use this as home decor. Remember, there is no limit to your creativity.

Do you have any creative gift ideas? If so, share them with me below! I am always on the lookout for DIYs.

Hanging with The Flintstones in Bedrock City!

During spring break of this year, my honey and I took our first out of state road trip -through Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. First thought during and after the road trip: my gawd is Texas a HUGE! Phew! Looking at a map and recognizing Texas is a large state is for babies. But, driving through and out of Texas truly is for troopers and road trip lovers only. I have taken road trips out of Texas before, but never going west. Nevertheless, it was an exhausting and fun experience all at once. One of the coolest surprises we found through our road trip, aside from experiencing through skin and bone how large Texas is, was coming across The Flintstones Bedrock City Theme Park in AZ!

We stayed in a hotel few miles south our target destination- The Grand Canyon. Little did we know when we booked our hotel that right next door to us would be The Flintstones Bedrock City theme park. It was such a pleasant surprise for me, as The Flintstones was a huge part of my childhood back in Central America. Side note: As a kid, I watched show in Spanish, then called “Los Picapiedras”, and didn’t know the English name of the show until watching an episode from “The office” where they make a reference to the theme song of the show. Anyway, I was so excited when we checked in our hotel that I wanted to run to the theme park immediately. I didn’t. Instead, we drove by it and checked out opening and closing times of gift shop and theme park so we could make plans for the next day.

Walking into TFBC theme park the next day was strange, but oh so fun. When you first walk in, there’s an intense smell of firewood. As it turns out, the gift shop is also an indoor café where they sell smoked burgers along with other dishes. The entire store smells like firewood, which in my opinion goes well with the Bedrock City theme. Ha. It was also very dim, which I also feel goes well with the Bedrock theme look. The entire store is shaped like a house directly from The Flintstones Bedrock City show itself, with barely any windows, very rocky-looking, you definitely feel like you’re somewhere away from society. The store had everything you could think of Flintstones-related- and quite pricey I must say. I ended up buying myself and my niece a t-shirt. That was all.

Then came the fun part, the theme park! Which mind you, at this point I was thinking there’d be some sort of big rides, maybe a choo-choo train or something. There wasn’t. When you walk out the store into the park, you are suddenly in Bedrock city, though! They have a small neighborhood, completely Bedrock City themed! You see, this theme park is in the middle of almost nowhere. There is absolutely nothing surrounding TFBC Theme Park besides the hotel we were staying at and a gas station and a ton of desert land. So, walking out into the Bedrock City neighborhood and seeing the desert as a back yard was pretty neat, it makes the experience much more unique.

In this Bedrock “neighborhood”, you’ll come across Wilma’s and Fred’s home, Betty’s and Barney’s home, the local school, church, hospital, theater, grocery store, the county jail, all of which you can walk in to. I had such a fun time going into all of their homes, which are fully furnished. My favorite part of the entire adventure aside from being in Bedrock City itself was spending time with the neighborhood pet: this cute goat! He/she was so friendly! Immediately when I walked up to it she came towards me and stuck her head out to be petted. We definitely bonded and I have images to prove it.

We had so much fun at The Flintstones Bedrock City Theme Park. Although it didn’t have rides, per se, it had plenty of cute little homes and buildings that really did make you feel like you were in a Bedrock City movie set or something. There were statues of all the characters of the show, too! And they are human size, so you can pose with them in all kinds of fun ways. If you’re ever heading to Grand Canyon and you are a fan of The Flintstones, this little theme park will make a great stop for your road trip. My honey and I definitely had a fun time. It brought back good memories for me and made a great new set of memories with my love.

Night of Dreams at Austin High

cadetsWhat a wonderful evening we had last Thursday during our Night of Dreams event! The goal of Night of Dreams or Noche de Sueños was to educate parents and students from the East End community about the opportunities available to make a college education possible.garciatalkingThe event took off with a handful of inspirational speakers with backgrounds similar to the ones of our student population. That is first-generation college, low-income, Latino students, etc. Our first special guest speaker was Lieutenant Romeo Garcia III from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Lt. Garcia is currently an Admissions Counselor at the US Naval Academy where he recruits qualified students from all over the US. Lt. Garcia made several points that are very evident and real in the Hispanic community from the East End. 1. We are afraid of allowing our young adults to go away for college. And 2. We are afraid of dreaming “too big”. Deciding on a college or university is one of the biggest decisions a high school grad has to make. And, a lot of the times, this decision is made as a family. When making this decision, however, it’s imperative that goals and objectives for the student are kept in mind. To choose a university that will help achieve the highest, utmost dreams is the goal of a high school graduate- where ever this university is.

Lt. Garcia

rickgarcia

Our second guest speaker was Austin High School’s alumni, Mr. Rick Villanueva. Rick graduated from Austin High School in 1998. Like many of the students in the East End population, Villanueva struggled to get through high school. He not only had to play the role of being a responsible student but also play the role of the male figure who helps provide for his family. After his father became consumed by drugs and alcohol, Villanueva helped his mother and siblings survive. He became part of a single mother household where money soon ran out. Inevitably, he and his family became homeless. Villanueva talked about finding mattresses in trash piles and feeling happy at that moment because it meant a “better” night sleep for his family. His story is truly one for the books of champions and successors of our Latino community. I was overjoyed to have Rick participate in Night of Dreams as a speaker. Our parents and students who struggle in the way Rick did need to hear for themselves that through hardships one can still prevail. Villanueva attended Rice University and currently works for Valero Energy in the engineering department. What’s more amazing about this man is that he chooses to help his community by sharing his story and inspiring the Latino community. As an educator, my only hope is to see more students like Villanueva not feel defeated by life’s circumstances but move forward to work hard for a better life.

The evening continued to a college fair where schools from all over Texas had the opportunity to recruit students and inform them about academic programs available. During our college fair, we also had AMAZING dinner sponsored by Pollo Tropical and Kroger. To start off, the food arrived perfectly warm and in amazing quantities. The pollo was absolutely tender and incredibly fresh, all parents and students came back for seconds! My favorite thing, however, about Pollo Tropical is their rice and beans. My goodness, they are the best. I’m not sure if it’s because I am Hispanic and rice and beans are part of my culture, but the way they season the beans at Pollo Tropical makes me feel like I am eating from my mother’s kitchen. Delicious doesn’t even cut it! And of course, if you know Pollo Tropical you know they advocate for a healthier dinner. I love the fact that their delicious chicken is grilled and that they also catered salad to our event. The salad is best accompanied with their signature Cilantro Garlic Dressing that is so rich in flavor you only need a tad bit to make your salad even more tasteful. Or, if you are like me, you will just sprinkle the dressing on everything. Haha. It’s so delicious! To go along with this amazing dinner we had fruit, drinks, chips, and cookies sponsored by Kroger. My students and I created this beautiful delicious fruit salad with fresh fruits from Kroger. I love Kroger not only because their produce is incredibly fresh, but their fruit selection at this time of the year was amazing! We got some fruits that are “out of season”, but they tasted so sweet and tasty once we added them to our salad. And of course, if you are a Latino in Houston, you have more than likely tried Tajin. Tajin is a Mexican spice added to fruits and cocktails for a kick of spice and tanginess. As if there aren’t enough reasons to love Kroger, another is that they carry multicultural ingredients, such as Tajin. Such a sweet combination to add to our evening feast for our Night of Dreams.

inspired

Overall, Nigh of Dreams accomplished the objective of educating parents and students with immigrant, low income, and without higher education backgrounds about ways to make a college education possible. Night of Dreams was about challenging parents to dream larger for their sons and daughters. It was about daring each student to get out of their comfort zone to work hard and dream big.  We would like to thank all of our speakers and college representatives for creating such a nice atmosphere for our student body. One of the greatest parts of this event was that it required and involved many of our student’s help. We thank each and every one of them for dedicating their evening to helping me and Austin staff put the event together. We thank our amazing sponsors: Pollo Tropical and Kroger, for helping our community by being present in a very important way: through food and nourishment. “Be the change you want to see in the world”- this quote kept ringing in my ears through the planning of this wonderful event. I want our Latino community in Houston to show the world how truly amazing we can be if we only believe we can. Showing and teaching those who are oblivious or ignorant to opportunities is the way to build the community. I am sick and tired of living in a place of competition where once you “make it”, there’s no helping anyone else. “Empowerment” is another term that was ringing in my ear while putting this event together. We must empower our community and believe that we can make it. As someone once said, believe you can and you’re halfway there.

Business Advancement Conference- By Kindred Communications

BAC1Disclosure: This is a compensated post. All opinions expressed are my own.

Houston is a hot pot for diversity. Not only is it a culturally diverse city but also a nook where new diverse business bloom year in and year out.

Individuals who have been business owners for years know that to expand your business, there are massive forms of investment to be made for the business to remain relevant to the market.  With a market and commerce such as the one we currently live in, business owners must maintain relativity to the market. In 2016, this does not only mean physically delivering a product to customers; it means public relations, networking, marketing, and a big (Big) one, social media.

Operating a new business in Houston can be slightly frightening. There are new businesses opening every day and business shutting down every day, too.  The competition is endless. To our advantage, though, operating a new business in Houston can also be made easier. Living in a big city means there is a variety of resources from where new and sauced business owners can educate themselves of the do’s, the don’t’s and the how to’s of the current market.

One of those crucial and useful resources is Kindred Communications and their upcoming Business Advancement Conference. This year, Houston Latina Bloggers has partnered up with Kindred Communications and their conference, #BACHou2016. The conference’s agenda is formatted in a way that will require all attendees to participate in financial planning, branding, networking, DIY public relations, and much more.
